One of 500 copies in the standard edition. The Making of The Book of Common Prayer of 1928 by Martin Hutner. Includes a vellum leaf from the 1928 Book of Common Prayer. 34.8x25.5 cm (13¾x10"), full linen with morocco lettering piece on spine, slipcase. Designed by Jerry Kelly. One of 285 copies produced. First Edition. Early in his career, D.B. Updike had been involved with designing the 1892-93 Book of Common Prayer printed at the Devinne Press. In 1928 with the sponsorship of J.P. Morgan, Jr. Updike was selected to design and print a revision to the text. "It is interesting that it was the decoration and not the typography that Updike was asked to contribute to the Prayer Book of 1892. Though that was a decade which embraced much elaboration—some with elegance—there was a failure to blend the previously printed text with its superimposed borders. Thirty-five years later an entirely new aesthetic would lead to a Prayer Book devoid of any kind of decoration." - Hutner, p. 6. Leaf included in The Making of The Book of Common Prayer is composed of pp. 47-48, headed Prayers. Additional shipping charges may apply
