Military.- Dubois-Drahonet (Alexandre-Jean, French portrait painter, 1791-1834) Three portrait studies of military figures, all three identified, including a Private of the 8th (The King's Royal Irish) Hussars, Sergeant John Toms of the 15th (The King's) Hussars, and Private James Harmer of the 10th (The Prince of Wales's) Own Royal Hussars, probably preliminary studies for the commission from King William IV to paint a series of pictures illustrating recent changes in the uniforms and weapons of the British Army, watercolours over pencil and black chalk, two measure approx 230 x 160 mm. (9 x 6 1/4 in), the third 220 x 140 mm. (8 3/4 x 5 1/2 in), under glass, one numbered '87' in the upper left corner, some surface dirt, spotting and browning, with minor discoloration to corners from old tabs verso, presented in one mount, framed, [circa 1830s] ⁂ The finished paintings of the latter two sitters here identified are now held in the Royal Collection (see RCIN 407099 and 407096).
