MILTON, John (1608-1674). Paradise Lost . London: Printed by S. Simmons, and are to be sold by T. Helder at the Angel in Little Brittain. 1669.
MILTON, John (1608-1674). Paradise Lost . London: Printed by S. Simmons, and are to be sold by T. Helder at the Angel in Little Brittain. 1669. 4 o (183 x 136 mm). Roman and italic types, typographical rules, woodcut head pieces and initials at the start of each book. Collation : [i-ii] blank tipped-in to title [A1] which is a cancel, (lightly soiled and chipped at the edges), A2-A4 The Argument , a 4, A-Z 4, Aa-Vv 2, [Vv 3 stub]. (Lightly browned with a few pale stains.) Contemporary calf, blind border of double fillet, enclosing a panel of blind triple fillet, a stylized flower at each outside corner, spine in five panels, with four raised bands, each compartment with blind border of triple fillet, an extra wave roll at the head and foot, board edges with semi-circle roll, all edges sprinkled red (rebacked at an early date preserving the original spine, a few small later repairs). FIRST EDITION, IN A CONTEMPORARY BINDING. The title-page corresponding to Amory's third and the traditional (Pforzheimer/Lowndes) fifth "issue" with "Angel" in the imprint in roman type. The title-page to this copy is a cancel, as usual with copies of Paradise Lost later than 1667, designed to replace an earlier version printed on the same sheet as the pages of signature Vv, which leaf has been excised, so accounting for the stub at the end of this copy. Hugh Amory Things Unattempted Yet in The Book Collector , Spring 1983, pp. 41-66; Grolier Wither to Prior 603; Pforzheimer 718; Wing M-2142.
