Provenance : 17th-/18th-century pen trial on blank 2F4v--Thomas Edward Watson (bookplate; by descent to the present owners). FIRST COLLECTED EDITION OF MILTON'S POEMS. With the exception of 'On Shakespeare', 'Comus', and 'Lycidas', none of these pieces had been published previously, and the volume contains all of Milton's poetry written up to this date, apart from only 'two or three lesser pieces' (Pforzheimer). The title-page of this edition is known in two states: in the first (as here), the last line reads 'Arms in Pauls Church-yard. 1645' and in the second it reads 'Arms in S. Pauls Church-yard. 1645'.
