Section-title to 'Comus' and part-title to Latin poems. Woodcut headpieces and initials. (Occasional light spotting or marking, some unobtrusive light staining, a few leaves trimmed touching page numbers, signatures or text, lacking preliminary blank a1, frontispiece supplied in facsimile, first 3 quires lightly wormed, small marginal hole in 2A4.) 19th-century, green hard-grained morocco, boards with central gilt urns within blind-ruled borders, spine lettered in gilt, gilt morocco doublures, gilt edges (extremities very lightly rubbed, upper hinge split). Provenance : 17th-/18th-century pen trial on blank 2F4v--Thomas Edward Watson (bookplate; by descent to the present owners). FIRST COLLECTED EDITION OF MILTON'S POEMS. With the exception of 'On Shakespeare', 'Comus', and 'Lycidas', none of these pieces had been published previously, and the volume contains all of Milton's poetry written up to this date, apart from only 'two or three lesser pieces' (Pforzheimer). The title-page of this edition is known in two states: in the first (as here), the last line reads 'Arms in Pauls Church-yard. 1645' and in the second it reads 'Arms in S. Pauls Church-yard. 1645'.
