Title: Miniature sterling silver replica of the gold shovel President William H. Taft used in turning the first spadeful of earth to begin the building project for the P.P.I.E. Author: Place: San Francisco Publisher: Shreve & Co Date: c.1915 Description: 10 cm (4") long, the shovel portion 2 cm (¾") wide. The Shreve Company, considered the oldest commercial establishment in San Francisco, made the original gold shovel that President Taft used in the groundbreaking ceremony for the P.P.I.E., and they manufactured these little silver replicas as souvenirs, evidently to sell at the fair. The Presidential seal is on the handle, and the inscription on the shovel portion reads "used by William Howard Taft, President of the United States, October 14, 1911 - in turning the first spadeful of earth for the Panama-Pacific International Exposition to the held in San Francisco, 1915." Lot Amendments Condition: Just a little normal wear, very good. Item number: 261536
