Minton Majolica Jardiniere

Belle Epoque
10 Feb 2016
Estimate
US$1,000 - US$1,500
Price realised:
US$1,250
Beschreibung:

Minton Majolica Jardiniere Model no. 1429, circa 1875 Of urn form, with three lion masks around the body joined by swags, cobalt ground, turquoise interior. Height 14 1/2 inches. C
Visually and aesthetically, the jardiniere appears to be in good condition, however, a closer examination reveals there has been extensive professional restoration, including overpaint and probable infilling. For instance, the turquoise interior appears to be entirely overpainted; the exterior cobalt colored areas of the ground are also extensively overpainted; the cobalt colored top rim edge of the vessel and the cobalt colored areas of the foot rim edge are overpainted; the brown colored band around the neck has areas of brown overpaint that are not consistent with the original brown colored glaze; etc.,; not blacklighted; there is a small chip to the top rim edge that has been overpainted to visually mediate or negate the loss and there are some other similarly treated flake losses to the glaze; stamped 1429 and MINTON on the underside, however, there is pooling of the paint in these crevices
