Lot of 8 items. Randolph, J.H. and William Bostwick. 1 p. ALS dated January 23, 1845, Augusta, Georgia. A letter between two Georgian slave owners discussing the sale of a slave woman, Elizabeth. "If you desire to buy her, you should have her--She is very likely in her prime," writes Randolph to Bostwick. He wanted to sell her for $550. According to research, William Bostwick (1796-1863) was a cotton merchant in Augusta, Georgia and Connecticut. He kept a very detailed record of business which made him the subject of several books on the history of Georgia cotton merchants. 9 x 11 in. signed appointment by 1853 governor of Ohio, William Medill, granting Hiram H. Barney the position of State Commissioner of Common Schools. the original seal is partially intact. A 1p. letter from James Crocker in Madison, Wisconsin discussing an outbreak of cholera in the state in 1835. "I feel disposed to send you word that I am still among the living, and thank God for it." Crocker's letter was during the second global pandemic outbreak of cholera that lasted from 1829-1851 in India, Russia, Great Britain, the United States, and many other parts of the world. According to an article in Transaction of the American Clinical and Climatological Association the disease drastically changed the social structures of small Midwestern towns like Madison. Crocker wrote that cholera took "thirty to forty lives," which seems relatively minor to Russia's count of 100,000 deaths. Nonetheless, the total was much higher throughout the rest of Wisconsin and affected the economy and lives of many. A 6.5 x 8 in. bill of sale to a Mr. Henry A. Ellison for four women and men in the presence of Caroline Braddy. A 7.5 x 4 in. note for the Hungarian fund dated February 2, 1852. An ALS dated July 3, 1845, Gettysburg, PA penned by George Snyder, who is in the process of planning a large ball. An 1892 muster roll for a Private Marin H. Dubbs of the 1st Reg. of the Ohio National Guard, Co. D signed by Capt. D.W. O'Neil and Capt. C.B. Hunt. A few years after this document, in 1898, Capt. Hunt testified as part of a congressional investigation of the conduct of war with Spain. An 1822 Indenture written by Daniel Bailey granting William Henry Harrison (President of the United States in 1841) and John Cleves Short (Harrison's nephew) "for surplus land in the Miami purchase." Condition: Toning on many of the pages and brittleness of the edges. Some documents have some minor tears or holes. All the letters have typical folds.
