McGill, Ralph. “Gone with the Wind: The ‘story behind the story’….” The Red Barrel Vol. XV, No. 9 (September 15, 1936), pp 14-20. Orig. wraps. Minor thumbing and wear throughout, bookplate of George Cukor to interior front cover. George Cukor’s copy, annotated throughout by Margaret Mitchell. Soon after David O. Selznick bought the rights to Mitchell’s novel, she began corresponding with film director George Cukor regarding the project. She sent this issue of the Coca-Cola publication, The Red Barrel, featuring an article on the publishing history of the book. Mitchell expresses outrage at the apocryphal stories repeated, including the notion that the book was only a series of ragged chapters when it was first shown to MacMillan agent H.S. Latham, and that she only wrote the book when the contract was signed. “Errors like this give me fits!” she writes. “I finished the book years ago.”
