Edition nouvelle, trouvée après le décès de l'Autheur, reveue & augmentée par luy d'un tiers plus qu'aux précédentes impressions . Paris: Abel l'Angelier, 1595. 2° (312 x 208mm). Large woodcut printer's device to title [Renouard, Marques Typographiques Parisennes 551], woodcut vignettes and initials. (Title and first few leaves washed, last leaf with a few tears affecting some letters but expertly restored, occasional light spotting.) Early 20th-century red morocco by Riviere, covers panelled with gilt foliate-tooled frame, gilt spine, marbled endpapers, gilt turn-ins, gilt edges, all edges marbled under gilt (front joint cracking and very fragile, extremities lightly rubbed, lower joint more heavily). Provenance : early ink marginalia and underlining (mainly to second half of book, and trimmed by the binder) -- Mortimer L. Schiff (small red morocco gilt booklabel). FIRST COMPLETE EDITION, ENLARGED AND EDITED BY MONTAIGNE'S ADOPTED DAUGHTER, Marie le Jars de Gournay. This works comprises all three parts (two parts only had been previously published in Bordeaux in 1580), complete with Montaigne's final additions and corrections from his unpublished manuscripts, as well as Montaigne's 'Au Lecteur' dated 1580 and Gournay's preface. The latter does not appear in the simultaneous Paris edition by Michel Sonnius. Pp.63-64 and 69-70 are in the first, uncorrected state.
