"Account of a Visit from St. Nicholas" [Twas the night before Christmas].
As published on pp. 98-99 of the American Monthly Magazine. New York and Boston: George Dearborn, M Bancroft, Otis, and Broaders, January 1837. 8vo (9 1/4 x 5 7/8 inches; 233 x 150 mm). Original printed wrappers. Condition : scattered soiling and damp-staining; soiled, backstrip chipped with loss. the first time the author of this classic christmas poem is identified by name in a magazine . Moore's poem appears on pp. 98-99 together with his name. It is printed as part of a larger review of The New York Book of Poetry (also published by Dearborn) and consequently while this magazine may be simultaneous with the book publication, it is likely to have appeared slightly later. This magazine comes in two issues: one with New York above Boston in the imprint on the front wrapper (as here), and visa versa. The rear wrapper indicates that Bancroft and Otis, Broaders were agents for this publication in New York and Boston respectively. This suggests that Dearborn is the actual publisher, and that our version is therefore the first issue. Cf. Grolier/Elliott 50 (Boston issue only); cf. Marshall 16 (the Boston issue only).
