Engraved title-page and dedication, 208 engraved plates printed within engraved ornamental borders comprising 28 engraved plates and 180 engraved calligraphic text plates. (A few faint stains.) Contemporary French red morocco gilt, spine gilt in 6 compartments with 5 raised bands, edges gilt (lacking clasps, extremities lightly rubbed, corners bumped). Provenance : Isabelle du Montodran? (faint inscription on second leaf); acquired from Marlborough Rare Books, 1972. FIRST EDITION, presumed first issue of this exquisitely engraved prayer book, usually found with plates printed on 106 leaves but printed here on 108 leaves with the title-page, dedication, and 2 plates printed on one side only. The prayers are written in fine lettres financeéres , and some are interspersed with flowers and animals all surrounded by a variety of ornamental and historiated borders. The full-page illustrations include flowers, religious subjects, and a series of the Seven Deadly Sins, inspired by Jacques Callot Moreau was a Parisian writing master who invented the first script type, an imitation of his own calligraphy.
