MOREAU, Pierre. Les Saincts Prieres de l'ame Chrestienne Escrites & gravées aprés le naturel de la plume Par P. Moreau M. Escrivain Juré . Paris: 1631. 12° (128 x 83mm). ENGRAVED THROUGHOUT AND PRINTED ON SILK laid on thick paper. Collation: [1-12] 1 2 . 4 [13] 1 0 . Title within architectural border, verso with the arms of the Queen Mother, Marie de Medici, within border containing a calligraphic inscription, dedication to Marie, verso with the Crucifix within border, 28 pages with illustration of flowers, religious images or emblems, the remainder with calligraphic text, all within engraved borders of flowers, fruits, cornucopia, arabesques, masks etc. (Borders on 1/4r,9v and 4/1r,4r upside-down.) Contemporary French red morocco, covers with gilt fillets, front cover stamped with the holy monogram within crown-of-thorns, back cover stamped with MA[arie de Medici], cornerpieces of tongues-of-fire, spine lavishly gilt in compartments (slightly rubbed at extremities, lacks clasps and lower headband), varicolour silk liners, g.e., modern box. FIRST EDITION of this elegant prayer-book, engraved by the calligraphy master, Pierre Moreau and printed on silk. IT IS LIKELY THAT THIS WAS THE PRESENTATION COPY TO MARIE DE MEDICI, with its exquisite silk pages and her initials on the binding. 1631 was the year in which she was forced into exile. Brunet III-1895-1896 describes the 1649 edition [which is titled 'Devotes Prières escrites et burinées'] as 'texte gravé et décoré de jolis encadrements', adding 'il y en a une édition de 1631, pet. in 8., qui doit être préférée à celle-ci comme étant du premier tirage', but does not mention a copy or copies of any edition printed on silk. There are also editions of this work dated 1632 and 1644. Brunet mentions one other work by Moreau, and states that this Moreau was the originator of matrices imitating hand-writing and who was named 'imprimeur du roi' in 1642, printing various works in these characters.
