MURET, Marc-Antoine (1526-1585). Epistolae hymnisacri, et poemata omnia . Lyons: Petri Rigaud, 1613.
MURET, Marc-Antoine (1526-1585). Epistolae hymnisacri, et poemata omnia . Lyons: Petri Rigaud, 1613. 16 o (121 x 72 mm). Woodcut title vignette. (Some spotting and browning.) Early 17th-century Italian panelled calf, covers with two gilt roll borders enclosing a central panel with flowers and ornaments and the central medallion of the Sacra Rota with a closed umbrella tool, smooth spine gilt with a rosette tool and three small gilt fleurons, edges gilt (some light rubbing at extremities, some worming and rubbing on rear cover, lacking ties). Provenance : purchased from Lucien Goldschmidt, 30 October 1956. A rare binding for the Sacra Rota, the appellate tribunal of the Holy See and the second highest ecclesiastical court in the Roman Catholic Church. The emblem here, with a closed umbrella (or ombrellino ) instead of the papal tiara, denotes the vacancy of an elected Pope. It is therefore probable that this binding was executed either in 1621 at the death of Paul V or in 1623 at the death of Gregory XV. Due to the typically short interims between the death of a Pope and the election of a successor, bindings such as this are uncommon.
