NAPOLEON I (Emperor of France, 1804-1821). Letter signed ('Salut Bonaparte') addressed to Talleyrand as ambassador to the Sublime Porte, 'au quartier general du Caire, le 5 fructidor an 6' [22 August 1798] , enclosing despatches and requesting him to inform the Porte 'que la Religion est protégée, les mosquées sont respectées, que les prières des fidèles ont lieu comme à l'ordinaire', and with further assurances that Moslem fetes are observed and leaders respected, that trade is re-established and goods may be sent to Constantinople, also guaranteeing the route to Mecca, 1½ pages, folio , with two contemporary endorsements below the signature, the first 'Mensonges, mensonges en tout Mr. Buonaparte ... G.H.' and the second recording that the letter was enclosed in Captain G. Hope's letter of 2 November 1798; together with three autograph letters signed, by LOUIS PHILIPPE (King of France, 1830-1848) to an unidentified lady regretting that he was out when she called and declining an invitation (1815); NAPOLEON III (Emperor of France, 1852-1873), to the Baron Ernouf thanking him warmly for some books (1872); and by TALLEYRAND-PERIGORD, Charles-Maurice, Prince de (1754-1838) to Lord Palmerston, commenting 'Voila une grande et magnifique affaire donc je vous remercie de tout mon coeur', endorsed by Palmerston at foot, 'Proclamation of Maria at Lisbon' (1833); together 3 pages, 8vo and 4to , blanks. Provenance : Viscount Mersey (collection stamps). Napoleon had demanded that Talleyrand be sent to Constantinople as ambassador to obtain the Sultan's agreement to the occupation of Egypt, but Talleyrand had in fact contrived to avoid going there. The letter, which was intercepted, is dated three weeks after Nelson's victory at the battle of the Nile, hence Captain Hope's comment on it. (4)
