Narrative of a Whaling Voyage Round the Globe, from the Year 1833. Comprising Sketches of Polynesia, California, the Indian Archipelago, Etc. With an Account of Southern Whales, Sperm Whale Fishery, and the Natural History of the Climates Visited. London: Richard Bentley 1840. 2 volumes. 8vo (213 x 131 mm). 2 aquatint frontispieces and engraved folding map, wood engravings in the text. Contemporary navy calf gilt. Lacking one plate, but with Tahiti plate in duplicate, frontis in second volume spotted and corresponding title browned, else fairly clean, some shelfwear. Provenance: Gift inscription from Edward Wingfield Verner (1830-1899) to Charles Foster. FIRST EDITION. Bennett sailed on the English whaler Tuscan, which was also carrying several members of the London Missionary Society. The ship stopped at Pitcairn, Tahiti, and the Marquesas, and made three stops at Hawaii during the course of the voyage.
