Large Hawaiian national coat-of-arms by S.K. Mookini, ink, watercolor and gilt on paper, 24 x 28 inches, signed and dated lower right ("S.K. Mookini, Lahainaluna, May 22, [19]13"), substantial koa wood frame. The coat-of-arms was adopted by the Legislative Assembly of Hawaii in 1845. The motto translates as "the life of the land is perpetuated by righteousness." The artist behind this illustration was probably Samuel Mookini, who was more famous as the composer of the anthem for Lahainaluna High School. See illustration.
