N’chwaning Mines, Kalahari Fields, South Africa Named after Ettringen, Germany after the discovery of its type locality in 1874, ettringite is a sulfate which originally formed as a precipitate from hydrothermal solutions. This unique specimen is from a small find at this famous old mine, but in aesthetics is specially composed: an elegant and unusual cluster, quite unlike any other example of the species we have seen from previous finds in its overall geometry as well as in the qualities of the crystals. The larger crystal is doubly-terminated and 4.5 cm long, over 1 cm thick. It exemplifies the qualities of this find: translucency, shimmering surface luster, and unusual tapering form. It has a pastel lemon-yellow color with a certain ethereal quality that is unique, separating it from other crystalline material, measures 1 ¾ x 1 ¼ x 1in. Offered on a custom-fitted acrylic base.
