Nelson (Horatio, 1758-1805). Autograph letter, signed, to the Right Honorable Lord Chancellor, John Scott 1st Earl of Eldon (1751-1838), dated Merton, June 24th 1802, autograph letter in brown ink, written to the recto only of a single sheet of pale cream laid paper, thanking the Lord Chancellor for 'presenting Mr: Comyn to Bridgham', signed Nelson & Bronte, light creases where previously folded, sheet size 223 x 187 mm (8.75 x 7.3 ins), framed and glazed (Qty: 1) Reverend Stephen George Comyn served as Nelson's chaplain on H.M.S. Vanguard at the Battle of the Nile in 1799. He attended Nelson when he was wounded, and held the service of thanksgiving on the quarterdeck afterwards. He transferred with Nelson to the Foudroyant in June 1799. Comyn served again with Nelson in 1801, first in the San Josef, and subsequently in the St. George. He was Rector of St. Mary's, Bridgham, Norfolk, from 1802 to 1839. Comyn's monument in the church reads 'Sacred to the memory of the Reverend Stephen George Comyn, 36 years rector of this parish who died 17th March 1839 aged 73 years. Chaplain to vice-Admiral Lord Nelson, was with him in the Battle of the Nile and at Copenhagen and was presented to the rectory of this parish by the chancellor through the intercession of Lord Nelson'. Nelson wrote to Comyn on the same day as the present letter: 'I send you the Chancellor's letter, and most sincerely congratulate on your preferment, which to a person who has conducted himself so prudently in pecuniary affairs will make you truly comfortable', June 24th (Nicolas, Dispatches and Letters of vice-Admiral Lord Viscount Nelson, volume 5, page 19). The present letter is not included in Nicolas, Dispatches and Letters of Vice-Admiral Lord Visount Nelson, nor in Nelson, The New Letters, edited by Colin White (2005).
