NELSON, Horatio, Admiral (1758-1805). Autograph letter signed ('Nelson & Bronte') to Sargeant Shepperd, 'Victory feb[rua] . . . 14 . . . 1804 , acknowledging receipt of his letter of November 15th forwarded by Haslewoods, rejoicing in the success of his case against Earl St. Vincent, 'The Moniteur first announced to me that Justice had triumphed over power', expressing sincere thanks for Shepperd's help in the matter, and passing news of Shepperd's relative Mr. White serving with Captain Donnelly, 2 pages, 4to (small tear in fold); and with the autograph envelope inscribed 'Mr. Sargeant Shepperd Lincoln Inn Fields London', stamped 'Shipletter Portsmouth' and franked 14 June 1804 (torn and slightly soiled). Nelson long and drawn out case about prize-money against Earl St. Vincent was finally settled and improved Nelson's strained financial position. The warmth of this unpublished letter does not indicate the exact part Sheppard played in the affair, 'I am sure you would not have allowed me to go on if the Justness of my cause had not been clear to your mind, as a Lawyer & thank you ... as a friend for all the interest you took in it'. In his letter of 6 September 1803 forwarding the third codicil to his lawyer Haslewood (concerning the inheritance for his 'adopted' daughter Horatia and leaving her in the care of Lady Hamitlon), Nelson asks for his gratitude to be passed to Shepperd.
