Tinted lithographed pictorial title, 19 tinted lithographed plates with several highlighted with gum arabic, profusion of illustrated ads. Publisher's blue cloth gilt. Condition: Minor finger soiling; minor wear and bumps. Many of the plates are organized by occupation (including a rather anti-Semitic view of a tailor's shop) or by location. The plates, which include ads on verso, consist of: 1) [Fulton ferry, showing both the New York and Brooklyn skylines] 2) Chatham Street [view of a tailor's shop and trade] 3) [Ship from Liverpool arriving in the harbor] 4) Mrs. McHash Private Boarding 5) [Various performing arts, including a view of a whale in a tank at an Aquarium] 6) Castle Garden 7) [Affluent street scene] 8) [Providence line ferry] 9) [Scene in Central Park] 10) [Horse racing] 11) [Upper class women and men strolling] 12) Henry Hills Variety Theatre [includes image of a boxing match] 13) [Vignettes of working class people in the winter] 14) Chinese Quarters [including two reclining Chinese men smoking opium] 15) [An African-American] 16) Broadway [and] Houston [including an image of a prostitute and a gay dandy] 17) The Pedler [showing various images of different street sellers] 18) [Various occupations, including a newsboy, policeman and mail carrier] 19) [Military costume and band] The dating of the book is supplied by an ad on the rear pastedown dated 1878.
