Beschreibung:

Lot of 4, including: The Indianapolis Journal, Monday Morning, October 16, 1871, featuring on the front page An Accurate Map of the Burnt District of Chicago. And three issues of the Peoria Daily Transcript: Tuesday Morning, October 10, 1871; Wednesday Morning, October 11, 1871; and Thursday Morning, October 12, 1871. The first was printed while the fire was still burning, and the others update the sketchy information regarding it, with the disclaimer The Chicago calamity has disarranged all our newspaper and telegraphic communication, and the report The Chicago Journal extra, issued on Tuesday afternoon, says that it seems to be pretty well authenticated that the great fire was caused by a cow kicking over a lamp in a barn where a woman was milking her. That cow has surely secured a place in history and will go down to posterity as the immediate author of the greatest calamity of modern times. Condition: Folds, scattered minor stains, and edge wear.
