Nguyen Trung was born in 1940 in Soc Trang, near the Mekong Delta, and graduated from the École des Arts Appliqués de Gia Đinh in 1962. Nguyen is considered one of Vietnam's most influential and prominent artists.
Inspired by Buddhist philosophy, Nguyen Trung's paintings embody the spirituality of his culture and captivate viewers with their lyrical and poetic style.
At the beginning of his career, Nguyen Trung primarily worked with oil on canvas, employing a vibrant and refreshing colour palette reminiscent of Romantic Realism. He devoted himself to figurative paintings, predominantly depicting charming, graceful, pure, and lyrical female figures amidst a serene natural setting brimming with blossoms and fruit, infusing his works with a hint of nostalgia and reverie.
Subsequently, Trung transformed into one of the earliest Vietnamese abstract artists, undergoing a complete stylistic transformation in his quest for freedom and self-discovery. With his move towards abstraction, the use of lines and colours was minimised in his paintings. Some of his paintings reveal an almost shapeless space, with a sole light tone covering the entire composition and a few dark lines hinting at vague shapes. Yet, this vagueness held a serene beauty, at times austere and old, and at other times fresh and bright.
While the initial phase of his career was defined by a dreamy, romantic beauty, Trung's lyrical abstraction gradually progressed towards simplicity and minimalism. He demonstrated remarkable versatility, seamlessly weaving between figurative and abstract approaches, earning recognition as a true master of painting.
