Nicholson, Winifred 1893-1981 British (In the manner of), St James's Square. 20 x 24 ins., (51 x 61 cms.), Oil on Canvas, Framed. The subject of the painting is St. James's Park and the figure on top of the column is George Frederick, the Duke of York, who became infamous with the nursery rhyme, 'The Grand old Duke of York had ten thousand men; he marched them to the top of the hill and he marched them down again etc.. The hill has the charming town of Cassel at its peak. George Frederick was not a military marvel, his army suffered a severe defeat at the battle of Turcoing. Later Cassel was used as an HQ for the allied armies in World War I. All soldiers in the British army were docked a day's pay to fund the column. One can imagine that was not too popular. The painting has been shown to Christopher Andreae, Nicholson's biographer, who responded that he could not say the painting was by Nicholson, but also could not be definite it was not by her. It was also shown to another expert, who expressed doubts that it was by Nicholson. Hence we are selling it as 'In the manner of Winifred Nicholson ' The painting is very much the right period.
