NIGHTINGALE, Florence (1820-1910). Two autograph letters signed, one autograph letter (unsigned), one note in pencil signed (with initials) and one dictated letter signed to Dr John Murdoch 17 July 1886 - 29 October 1897, on sanitary conditions in rural India, requesting up-to-date publications on the matter, on native superstitions, and commenting on the work of others in this field and in education, 'I send you six more copies ... of Dr Hewlett's paper on Village Sanitation in India. I look forward so much to your promised tract for the Native on his duty to his village -- because there is so much ground, is there not? in a Hindoo's mind and training to stand upon in teaching him his public duties, not only to his caste, but to his village', and commenting on her health, 16 pages, 8vo, in autograph, and 4 pages, 8vo, in another hand (browned, the pencil note brittle and torn). Florence Nightingale had taken great interest in the sanitary conditions of India and the need for education to improve the general health of the population since the 1860s, and these letters give some indication of her correspondence with numerous Indian and European individuals on the subject.
