NIXON IN CHINA: THE EX-PRESIDENT VISITS AFTER HIS ENDEAVORS TO FORM A NEW DIPLOMATIC FRIENDSHIP In early 1972, Nixon broke new ground in American foreign policy by offering a hand of friendship to Communist China. Seeking a breakthrough in a cold war which pitted the nuclear superpowers against one another, Nixon made an unprecedented trip to meet personally with Mao Tse-Tung and Chou En-Lai making him the first President to visit China and the first to visit a nation with which we had no formal relations. The trip was greeted with enthusiasm by Chinese officials and the media, although the cold war continued on unimpeded. After resigning from the presidency, Nixon enjoyed continued popularity abroad and traveled to eighteen foreign countries and met frequently with heads of state. In 1979, he returned to the scene of his former triumph and enjoyed a meeting with Chinese Vice Premier Deng Xiaoping.
