NORFOLK, Henry Howard (1628-1684) -- Bibliotheca Norfolciana: Sive catalogus libb. manuscriptorum & impressorum in omni arte & lingua . London: Richard Chiswell, 1681. 4 o (226 x 106 mm). (Some pale soiling to title.) 18th-century tree calf (joints rubbed and a bit weak). Provenance : George Rose (bookplate); Hans Furstenberg (bookplate). THE EARLIEST PRINTED CATALOGUE OF THE ROYAL SOCIETY. These books were presented to the Society in 1678 by Henry Howard (later sixth Duke of Norfolk) whose grandfather, the Earl of Arundel, had purchased many of them during his embassy to Vienna in 1636. A number of the books he purchased were said to have come from the library of Matthias Corvinus, King of Hungary. Many of the important books from this collection were sold on behalf of the Royal Society by Sotheby's in 1925. Wing N-1230.
