L6 The Sahara Desert, Eastern Morocco This is a beautiful complete slice of one of the larger meteorites found in the Sahara. The appealing variegated matrix, ranging from suede to chocolate, contrasts dramatically with the glimmering particles of nickel-iron and galaxy of rich grains scattered throughout. Two very large chondrules (spherules of silica) and a large iron inclusion punctuate the matrix. This complete slice is rimmed in fusion crust—the result of the meteorite’s blazing descent through the atmosphere. As there was no geographic marker near where this meteorite was recovered, its name derives from it being the 250th meteorite analyzed from what has been an area designated by scientists as the “North West Africa” corridor, thousands of square miles. 242 x 218 x 5mm (9.5 x 8.5 x 0.25in) and 920 grams (2.0 pounds)
