Silver gelatin photograph, 6 X 8 in., of Roald Engelbert Amundsen (1872 - 1928), a Norwegian explorer who led the Antarctic Expedition (1910 - 1912) to discover the South Pole. Amundsen was the expedition leader to reach the North Pole, by plane, in 1926. He is also known as the first to traverse the Northwest Passage (1903-1906). Amundsen disappeared in June 1928 while taking part in a rescue mission. The photo includes from left to right, as identified in red pencil/crayon on verso: an unknown Eskimo, Roald Amundsen, Ralph Lornen, and Captain Douglas. Taken ca 1926 -1928.
