"Notitia Dignitatum Imperii Romani ex nova recensione Philippi Labbe, cum pluribus aliis Opusculis, Indicibus ac Notis", Parisiis, Typographia Regia, 1601. Small 8vo, pp.[20], 266, [92]. Fine contemporary vellum. Complete: full page engraved frontis, Royal engraved device on title, ancient circular illegible stamp on title. A fine, clean copy. Third edition of the famous Notitia Dignitatum, a fundamental geographical source of the late Roman Empire. The other works include the very important 4th century anonymous work: Descriptio Orbis Constantinopolitani, a unique source for the 4th century Constantinople, the Descriptio Illyrici Provinciarum, a rare geographical work for Greece and the Balkans, as well the Descriptio Orbis Romae and several other minor Roman works. The Notitia Dignitatum is a very extent Roman official document which describes all the administrative organisation of the early Byzantine Empire of late 4thearly 5th century, covering the East and most of the west part of the Empire. It describes provincial governments, diplomatic missions, army units and stations as well as thousands offices. Therefore, it is a unique geographical and historical source. EXTREMELY RARE.
