MANUSCRIPTS - BOOK OF HOURS - Calendar leaf from a Book of Hours. North-eastern France or the Southern Netherlands, c. 1480-1490. Calendar initial heightened with gold. The text of the Calendar (1-15 November on recto; 16-30 November on verso: made visible at the back) is surrounded on three sides by a floral border of paired green leafs, a blue end yellow acanthus leaf and red and yellow buds. In the right margin is a very charming miniature of 138 x 44 mm., showing the traditional occupation belonging to November: the Gathering of acorns for pigs in a woody landscape along a river. With a long stick one of the two man is trying to get the acorns down from the oak trees (the man is depicted with his arms in a rather clumsily, almost funny and pathetic position) the other man is watching while the nine pigs are eating the acorns that have been fallen on the ground already. The following entries of the Calendar are written in red: 1 November: All saints (‘tous sains’); 2 November: All Souls (‘tous mors’); 11 November: S. Martin; (at the back): 23 November: S. Clement; 25 November: Se. Katherine; 30 November: S. Andre, suggesting that the Calendar is from a Book of Hours written in, or made for the use in the Diocese of Liège. Nicely framed under passe-partout behind glass. Little tear of c. 1 cm. in the middle of the leaf, affecting the text of the saint for 12 November. Dimensions: Image size 16.3 x 11.7 cm., frame size 27 x 22 cm. Artist or Maker: BOOK OF HOURS
