His extensive diaries have been compared with that of Samuel Pepys and hailed as 'a treasure of contemporary English literature'. Lees-Milne was friends with many prominent intellectual and social figures of his day. In 1951 he married Alvilde, Viscountess Chaplin, a prominent gardening and landscape expert. Both were bisexual.
