FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH, additional engraved title, letterpress title in red and black, 39 plates and maps of which 32 double-page, numerous smaller engravings in the text, engraved and woodcut initials and head-pieces. (16½ [v.2: 15 3/16] x 10¼ in.), contemporary English mottled calf panelled in gilt, inner panel with ovals containing flower and leaf tools at corners, central gilt medallion with wreathed cipher (gryphon's head emerging from crown with crescent), rebacked, some rubbing; modern folding chemises and calf-backed slipcases (a bit rubbed). An early uniform set of Ogilby's China books. Nieuhof's account of the Dutch East India Company's embassy to China in 1655-57 was first published in 1665. Ogilby's translation includes excerpts from Kircher's China monumentis (1667). Montanus's more comprehensive description of China is also based on the Dutch East India Company's activities there in the 1650s and 60s; the text was actually written by Olfert Dapper and first published in Dutch in 1670. Provenance : Richard Parsons of Gloucestershire, signatures dated 1697 on both front pastedowns -- Thomas Wentworth, signature dated 1712 on Montanus engraved title and on Nieuhof title, the latter with purchase note indicating that these volumes were part of a six-volume set of Ogilby's works -- Neat 18th-century ms. note on front free endpaper of first volume -- William Charles de Meuron, Earl Fitzwilliam, armorial bookplates; traces of wax seal in first vol., both vols. with 3 successive shelf-mark numbers inscribed on front pastedowns.
