Ohio Governor Robert Lucas DS, Involving Land Granted to State to Aid in Canal Construction

Lucas, Robert (1781-1853). Served as the 12th Governor of the State of Ohio from 1832-1836. Partially printed DS as Governor of Ohio, "Robert Lucas," 1p, 10 x 16.75 in. August 15, 1835. Document states in part, "That in consideration for the sum of Five Hundred and Sixty-One Dollars, and Ninety-Six Cents, paid by Theodore Strong, Eliphalets Williams, Josiah D. Whitney, Lewis Strong, & Daniel Kerrs to Joseph G. Young, Receiver of Miami Canal Lands, Piqua Ohio, for the purchase of a tract of land herein described, lying and being in the County of Paulding and granted by an act of Congress, entitled "An Act to aid the State of Ohio in extending the Miami Canal from Dayton to Lake Erie; and to grant a quantity of land to said State, to aid in the construction of the Canals authorized by law...." The Ohio legislature first approved funds for the creation of a canal in 1825. The Miami and Erie Canal ultimately spanned the vertical length of Ohio running from Toledo to Cincinnati, and was designed to create a water route from the Ohio River to Lake Erie. Condition: Creased along the folds with slight tear along center horizontal fold. Toned. Overall good condition.
