oil on board, signed and dated lower right Edmund D. Lewis, 88. Landscape portraying an old stone mill with two figures fishing off the dam, with mountains and a waterfall in the distance. In a gilt frame; 15.25" x 22.5" (w/o frame), 21" x 27.5 (w/frame). Edmund Darch Lewis (American, 1835-1910) was born in Philadelphia and studied with landscape artist Paul Weber He was a contemporary of Frederic Edwin Church and Albert Bierstadt whose influence is seen in his romantic landscapes. A prolific painter well known for his marine scenes, Lewis primarily painted the Philadelphia, New York, and New England areas, especially the Delaware Water Gap region in Western New Jersey. Condition: One small area of inpainting on the extreme lower right corner in the water, not affecting the painting.
