His major projects are unparalleled sources of inspiration and excitement, including those that take place outside of museums. The art of drawing occupies a central place in his work, which makes use of all media and encompasses natural phenomena such as water, ice, and light. The work Glacial Currents (Black, Blue) comes from one of the artist’s most recent groups of work, which he specifically made for the major exhibition of his drawings at the Pinakothek der Moderne in 2018. It is a series of strikingly large-scale watercolours in which, in addition to the precisely calculated ratio of pigments, ink, and melting glacier ice, chance plays a central role. The result, in the ideal form of a circle, is an almost poetic play of colours in innumerable shades of grey and blue, whose colour and appearance are not only created from melting ice, but are also reminiscent of ice itself. Eliasson has also used glacier ice in his previous work, for example in his installation Your Waste of Time (2006) at the Galerie neugerriemschneider in Berlin and Ice Watch on the occasion of the 2015 World Climate Summit in Paris, to bring climate change and the related approaching effects into the viewer’s range of vision. With the melting ice, he impressively brings the fragile beauty of our blue planet before our eyes. Eliasson has long had a special connection with the city of Munich: his Sphere has been installed in the Fünf Höfe shopping mall since 2003. In 2004, he created a never-ending staircase in the form of a double helix for the local branch of KPMG: Umschreibung (Circumscription). In 2005, he fashioned a glass window for the rehearsal building of the Bayerische Staatsoper at Marstallplatz. Finally, in 2013, the large light sculpture Wirbelwerk (Whirl Work) was installed in the foyer of the new building of the Lenbachhaus.
