One Hundred and Twenty Copper-Plates of English Moths and Butterflies, Representing their Changes into Caterpillar, Chrysalis and Fly States, and the Plants, Flowers and Fruits, whereon they feed. Coloured with great Exactness from the Subjects themselves. With a Natural History of the Moths and Butterflies, Describing the Method of Managing, Preserving, and Feeding them... To which is Added, an Index of the Insects and Plants, Adapted to Linnaeus's System, 2nd edition, printed for Benjamin White, 1773, 120 fine hand-coloured engraved plates after George Ehret and Jacob Van Huysum some bound out of sequence, one or two close-trimmed at top margin just affecting image, plate CII bound upside down and numbered at foot, bound without half title, occasional light offsetting to title, all edges gilt, contemporary green blindstamped morocco gilt, rebacked with original spine relaid, a few scuff marks, 4to Lisney 186; Nissen ZBI 4410a. A fine copy of the second edition of one the most important works on British butterflies and moths, illustrating the three stages of each specimen's development and the plant they fed on. After joining the Aurelian Society, Wilkes formed his own collection of native lepidoptera, spending some ten years compiling notes and drawings for the publication. (1)
