Title: Original photograph of ten members of the Metlakahtla, Alaska, baseball team at Dr. William Duncan's mission Author: Place: Alaska Publisher: Date: c.1900 Description: Gelatin silver photograph.16x20.5 cm (6¼x8¼"), on old (but not original) mount. Ten members of the mission baseball team at Metlakatla, on Annette Island off the southeastern coast of Alaska. Five at least are wearing baseball gloves. William Duncan founded the mission in 1888 after a doctrinal dispute with the Church authorities in Metlakatla, B.C. He and a devoted group of Tsimshian followers decided to leave "Old" Metlakatla.and were granted land in Alaska, starting a mission of the same name. Though Williams was English, his charges seem to have been quick to adapt to the prototypical American pastime of baseball.
