Her degree from Berkeley is in Literature. She wrote and illustrated her first book in 1989, and since then, fifteen books have followed, among them the award winning titles The Paper Princess, The Puddle Pail, and The Lion and the Little Red Bird. Elisa also illustrated City By the Bay, a colorful favorite about San Francisco. Ms. Kleven's awards include those from ABA/CBC, School Library Journal, ALA, Library of Congress Books for Children, and other distinctive recognitions. Her collages are extraordinarily detailed and vibrant, a medium which she retained from childhood, which she calls "a malleable, forgiving medium which allows me great freedom to experiment, arrange, re-arrange, and discover joyful surprises."
