Ulisse Aldrovandi Ornithologiae hoc est de avibus historiae libri XII. [Band I von 3]. Bologna, G. B. Bellagamba für F. dei Franceschi 1599. Erster Band des reich illustrierten und prächtigen Hauptwerkes des Bologneser Arztes und Naturforschers Aldrovandi (1522-1605), die ersten 16 Kapitel darin behandeln Raubvögel und deren Abrichtung. Erste Ausgabe. - Mit den detailgetreuen und naturalistischen Holzschnitten, die Hälfte davon ganzseitig, nach dem Miniaturisten und Tiermaler Lorenzo Bennini (vgl. Thieme/B. III, 335). "Uneingeschränkt sind auch die meisterlichen Illustrationen zu loben .. Coriolano (Lederer?) aus Nürnberg, der zusammen mit seinem Enkel die Figuren so elegant geschnitten habe, daß sie eher wie Kupferstiche wirkten .. Nur unter der Hand eines überragenden Meisters beweist der Holzschnitt die gleiche Willfährigkeit (wie der Kupferstich)" (Nissen S. 36f.). "Aldrovandus, who is not unjustly called the Pontifex maximus of natural history by the contemporaries, has collected in a very scholarly way .. This work, like that of Gesner, had great influence on the study of natural history up to the end of the 17th century .. The value of Aldrovandi's ornithology is enhanced by its many original illustrations, which are often good and are generally better than Gesner's .. No effort or expense was spared in obtaining the pictorial material on which, and on the provision of a large collection, Aldrovandi spent all his fortune" (Anker). Contemp. pigskin over wooden boards, richly rollstamped, back panel with Justitia, front panel with giltstamped Saxon armorial centrepiece, giltstamped initials "I C H Z S G O B" and dated 1616, and with 2 brass fittings. - Partly slightly browned and at the beginning waterstained, 1 leaf with small marginal tear, 1 leaf with rebacked torn off corner, title with marginal defects and 2 old owner's entries, among them "Andrea Episcopi med. doctoris 1637". Binding partly scraped, movalble clasps removed.
