Pair of Gorham Mfg. Co. Egyptian Revival Style Sterling Silver Candlesticks D.M. Stief, last quarter of the 19th century Each in the form of a cobra, surmounted with a lotus blossom form candle holder. Height 8 3/4 inches, total approximately 67 ounces. C
Each appears to be in good condition; there is a drill hole on each underside; it appears there is a solder repair to one of the candlesticks located in the area where the base of the blossom is affixed to the head of the cobra and, in addition, it appears there is a very tiny vertical stress crack to the stem area of the blossom above the solder repair; each is stamped on the underside at the tip of the tail with the Gorham company symbol: lion silhouette, anchor and letter "G"; further marked: STERLING D. M. STIEF and DYD Note: It is unclear who D.M. Stief is. It is possible he was employed at Gorham and that he either designed or made these candlesticks. Alternatively, it is also possible the stamp mark is actually B.H. STIEF (not B.M. STIEF) since there was a firm active in the late 19th century named the B.H. Stief Jewelry Company, in Nashville, Tennessee, which stamped silver pieces they retailed. The stamp s on both candlesticks are extremely small and not quite clear. It is clear the first two letters are either D or B and the next letter is either M or H. The date attribution is based upon the Gorham mark.
