Lot details China. Ink and watercolor on paper. Depicting a pair of herons perched at the shore of a lake, fishing, surrounded by reeds, painted with vivid brush strokes, and sharp yellow beaks. Inscriptions: Lower right, signed ‘Lin Fengmian’. One seal, ‘Lin Fengmian’ Provenance: From a noted private collection. By repute acquired from a collector who purchased the painting directly from Chung Kiu Chinese Products Emporium, which was established on Nathan Road in Hong Kong in 1958, and is a known early provenance of works by Lin Fengmian Merchant paper label to backside with inscription: "Lin Fegmian, pair of herons". Condition: Very good condition with only minor wear, few minuscule tears, some foxing, and little creasing. Dimensions: Image size 72 x 65.5 cm, Size incl. mounting 100 x 93 cm Framed. (2) Lin Fengmian (1900-1991) is considered a pioneer of modern Chinese painting, mostly for blending Western and Chinese styles, as he was one of the earliest Chinese painters to study in Europe. He was also an important innovator in the area of Chinese art education and one of The Four Great Academy Presidents, a group of artists who were revered in the early Republic due to their effective stewardship of the art academies they presided over.
