Martyrium des Heiligen Sebastian.

H. 47, B. 33 cm (Bildträger). Vergolderrahmen mit Bogensegment.
Das vorliegende Gemälde zeigt eine nordalpine Kopie des Martyriums des Heiligen Sebastian, die auf ein wohl nicht erhaltenes Vorbild von Palma Giovane (1550 - 1628) zurückgeht. Dieses ist durch Drucke und weitere Variationen in Öl belegt, von denen sich eine im Milwaukee Art Museum mit der Inventarnr. M1991.40 befindet.
Den Weg über die Alpen nahm das Bild vermutlich in Form eines Kupferstiches. Schon bald nach Entstehen der beliebten Bildfindung Palmas wurde diese durch Aegidius Sadeler d.J. (1568 - 1629) und Thomas de Leu (ca. 1555 - 1612) als Kupferstiche einmal seitenrichtig und einmal seitenverkehrt reproduziert und erreichte somit europaweit große Bekanntheit, in deren Folge Variationen der Komposition in Öl von unterschiedlichen nicht italienischen Künstlern entstanden, darunter ein Ölgemälde in der Sammlung Corsini in Rom (Inventarnr. 248).
Einen solchen Kupferstich von de Leu muss der flämische oder deutsche Maler dieses Heiligenbildes zur Vorlage gehabt haben, als er seine italienisch inspirierte Kopie des Themas mit starken manieristischen Zügen in feinster Malerei entstehen ließ. Das Gemälde ist ein exzellentes Beispiel für den europäischen Kulturaustausch im frühen 17. Jahrhundert.

Zustandsbericht:
Guter Gesamteindruck. Holztafel mit zwei vertikalen Spannungsrissen (ca. 13 und 33 cm) sowie o.r. weiterer Riss (ca. 7 cm), alle mit umliegenden Retuschen, im Bogensegment Holzergänzungen, partielle Farbverluste (ca. 1 bis 8 mm), vereinzelt weitere punktuelle Retuschen.

This painting shows a northern Alpine copy of the Martyrdom of Saint Sebastian, which goes back to a model by Palma Giovane (1550 - 1628) that has probably not survived. Prints and other variations in oil supply the evidence, one of which is in the Milwaukee Art Museum with the inventory number M1991.40.
The image probably made its way across the Alps in the form of a copper engraving. Soon after the creation of Palma's popular pictorial invention, it was reproduced by Aegidius Sadeler the younger (1568 - 1629) and Thomas de Leu (around 1555 - 1612) as copperplate engravings, once laterally correct and the other reversed thus achieving great fame throughout Europe. These resulted in variations of the composition in oil by various non-Italian artists, including an oil painting in the Corsini Collection in Rome (inventory number 248).
Possessing such a copper engraving by de Leu as a template, the Flemish or German painter of this image created his Italian-inspired copy of the subject with strong mannerist traits in the finest form of painting. It is an excellent example of European cultural exchange in the early 17th century.

Good overall impression. Wooden panel with two vertical stress cracks (approx. 13 and 33 cm) as well as another crack (approx. 7 cm) upper right, all with surrounding retouching, arch segment with wood additions, partial paint loss (approx. 1 to 8 mm), isolated further skilfully retouched spots.
