Flat and clean, decent cover sheen, light spine and corner wear, bit of stress to top staple. A handsome copy. Penciled distributor's mark to back cover ("12/15"). Al Feldstein cover. Feldstein scripts (one script is a Gaines-Feldstein collaboration). Art by Jack Davis Joe Orlando, Jack Kamen and Will Elder Elder's story is adapted from Charles Clement Moore's poem "The Night Before Christmas." A Moral Panic From the Springfield Daily News: "SANTA CLAUS COMIC DRAWS HOLYOKE BAN. Holyoke, Dec. 19—A comic book described by Atty. Gen. George Fingold as 'desecrating Christmas' has been dropped from sale by the Holyoke News Co. local distributing agency, reported Martin Zanger, owner, today.... The book showed Santa Claus riding a sled bearing a 'Just Divorced' sign... a meat cleaver, ash can and a two daggers were tied to the rear of the sled." From the Boston Daily Globe: "STATE BANS 'NIGHT BEFORE'; PUBLISHER YANKS BIBLE TALES. A New York publisher said last night that he was halting circulation of Biblical picture stories in Massachusetts because of the Bay State ban on his cartoon version of 'The Night Before Christmas.' William Gaines said he was taking the Biblical picture books off the state's book stands as a 'retaliatory measure.'" From the Springfield Union: "'BIBLE STORY BOOK PUBLISHER TO WITHDRAW IS LONG GONE. The two 'Picture Stories from the Bible' comic books which a New York publisher said will be withdrawn from Massachusetts haven't been sold in Springfield for at least five years, distributor Samuel Black said yesterday.'" -Press quotes from Frank Jacobs' The MAD World of William M. Gaines. Bill Gaines: "Now how do a bunch of iconoclastic, atheist bastards like us know that Santa Claus is a saint and that he can't be divorced and that this is going to offend Boston? [Laughter.]" -The Comics Journal. A limited edition of 100 softcover and 15 hardcover catalogues are available. Over 200 pages, fully illustrated. Fun reference, great keepsake.
