PANTHEUS, Joannes Antonius. Annotationes ex trium dierum confabulationibus [ De Thermis Caldarianis ]. Venice: Bernardinus Venetus, de Vitalibus, [ca. 1505?]. 2°, 79 leaves (of 80, without the final blank). 39 lines and headlines, shoulder notes, tables (aa4v-bb2r) in two columns. Types 3:111R, Greek. 3-line initial spaces with guide letters. Woodcut floriated outline initials (33 x 33 mm), a few historiated, one smaller black-on-white initial Q. (Restoration to upper margins of s1-4 slightly affecting headlines.) Later vellum, remains of 17th-century morocco title label on spine, edges stained green (endpapers renewed). Provenance: "Antonij Fumarelli"(? early ownership inscription on last leaf). FIRST EDITION, a detailed description of the thermal baths of Caldiero, near Verona. Couched in the form of a dialogue taking place over three days between the narrator and two interlocutors named Ermolao and Aleardo, the work examines the physical geography of the thermal baths, known since Roman times, and of their source in the Lessini hills near Verona. It further delves into the question of the physical causes and origins of hot springs, surveys the various kinds of balnea as described by the authorities of Antiquity, and examines their medicinal applications and properties, concluding with recommendations for the proper use of the baths at Caldiero. The final opuscule describes the origins and attractions of Verona. Panteo, a Venetian monk of the late 14th and early 15th century, later published two treatises on alchemy. Listed as "sine nota" in Goff, the work has been assigned by IGI, CIBN and BM/STC Italian to the press of the long-lived Bernardinus de Vitalibus, whose activity extended from 1494 through at least 1535.
