PARIS 1594 -- Sommaire Discours de la Reduction de Paris recueilly par G.M.D.R. Paris: Veuve J. Leclerc, 1594. Complete set of three broadsides, each with an engraved scene by JEAN LE CLERC after NICOLAS BOLLERY and surrounded by letterpress text and typographic border. 420 x 550 mm sheets, 227 x 297 mm images. A superb set illustrating the entry of HENRI IV into Paris on 22 March 1594. Between 1589 and 1594, Henri was fighting his way to the thrown against Catholic opposition. After his abjuration and conversion to Catholicism in 1593, he was crowned King at Chartres on 27 February, and in these views is seen triumphantly entering Paris with his troops on 22 March. The three views comprise: "Reduction miraculeuse de Paris sous l'obeïssance du Roy Tres-Chrestien Henry IIII. & comme sa Majesté y entra par la Porte Neusue le Mary 22. de Mars 1594," "Comme le Roy alla incontinent à Eglise de nostre Dame rendre graces solennelles à Dieu de ceste admirable reduction de la ville Capitale de son Royaume," and "Comme sa Majesté le mesme iour estant à la Porte S. Denis, veid sortir hors de Paris les garnisons etrangers que le Roy d'Espagne y entretenoit." At the head of the first sheet is a long epistle from Jean Le Clerc to the King, with a description of the events. (3)
