NICOLAUS DE LYRA. Biblie iampridem renouate pars prima: co[m]plecte[n]s pentateuchu[m]... cu[m]glosa ordinaria, et litterali moraliq[ue] expositione Nicolai de lyra... (Basel, Fröben?) 1502. Edited by Sebastian Brant Comments by Nicolaus de Lyra. Only part I of 6. Folio (310x219 mm). (1), 2-377 ll. Roman type, in two columns, sometimes 3 columns. With woodcut initials, a few woodcut images. Title with contemporary signature by Harister (?) Jacobus Nicolaides (?) and one overwritten signature, some contemporary notes to the margins. Later vellum (19th century), soiled and rubbed, upper board detached, red speckled edges. The book has been given as a gift which is noted on first endpaper "The Rev. J. Allanson ... from C[hristian]. D[avid] Ginsberg". First sheet loose, 2 leaves at the end with textlosses, leaf 121 stained with loss of minor text, and with tear, partly some dampstaining to text and outer margins, about 40 leaves more, at the end some dampstaining and tears mostly to outer margins, leaves 3-9 and some leaves at the end somewhat loose to upper part, some spotting. Compare Darlow-Moule, 6085. Edition with comments by Nicolaus de Lyra (c. 1270-1340), a doctor of theology in Paris. This Bible edition was first published in Milan 1481 and "may be said to mark the first beginnings of a school of natural exegesis" (Darlow-Moule). The images are on leaves 182, 184, 199 and 271. Christian David Ginsberg (1831-1914), was a Polish-born British Bible (especially Judaism) scholar.
