Beschreibung:

Pastel and pencil on paper Signed lower right, titled, dated 1944 and indistinctly inscribed lower left 24 x 28.5 cm. (9 3/8 x 11 1/4 in) Exhibited: Fieldborne Galleries, London, Retrospective Exhibition of Works by Lord Methuen, May 1973, cat. no. 49 (label on the reverse). Note: Paul Ayshford Methuen met Clifford and Rosemary Ellis shortly after their arrival in Bath in 1936 through the Bath Society of Artists. He believed that Corsham Court with its important art collection and historically important house and grounds, designed by Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown, offered the teachers and students at Bath Academy of Art a unique environment for their studies. Methuen himself had studied at the Ruskin School of Art in Oxford and, in 1927, had attended drawing classes with Walter Sickert which had a profound impact on work. He is known mostly as a painter of urban views and outdoor views, many of which contain examples of the many interesting plants grown at Corsham Court. Condition report disclaimer
