PATER, WALTER. Autograph letter signed ("W.H. Pater") to the poet Roden Noel, Brasenose [College, Oxford], 29 December [1872]. 2 1/2 pages, 8vo, a trifle wrinkled, integral second leaf laid down on larger sheet . An early Pater letter written the year before his Studies in the History of the Renaissance (1873) was published. "I have been very busy for many weeks past [probably on the above-mentioned book] and must make many apologies for not having long since acknowledged the 'Red Flag' [Noel's third book, The Red Flag , published in 1872], which you so kindly sent me, much of which however I had read with great pleasure...I am not one of those who think political questions an unfit subject for poetry, a point which I think Swinburne [settled conclusively?] in his article on 'L'annèe terrible'..." Pater devotes a page on commenting on five poems in the book and closes: "...Excuse all this. I should much like some day to accept the kind invitation in a former note of yours..." Not in Letters of Walter Pater (Oxford, 1970) and apparently unpublished. Pater's letters are rare, despite there being five in this and the following two lots.
