PAUSANIAS. Pausanias, ou voyage historique de la Grece, traduit en françois, avec des remarques. Par m. l'abbé Gedoyn... Paris (chez Didot) 1731. 4:o. (2), (i)-xxiv, (1)-478, (4), i-viii; (2), (1)-523, (1) pp. Titles printed in red and black, 3 engraved folding maps, 4 engraved folding plates (all, lacks the engraved frontispiece). Later (early 19th century) half cloth, marbled boards, faded spines. Minor foxing. 2 volumes. Pausanias (c. CE 110 - CE 180), Greek traveler and geographer of the 2nd century CE, who lived in the times of Hadrian, Antoninus Pius and Marcus Aurelius. He is famous for his Description of Greece (????d?? pe?????s??), a lengthy work that describes ancient Greece from firsthand observations, and is a crucial link between classical literature and modern archaeology.
