Pere Philippe, "Voyage dOrient ou il decrit plusieurs regions dOrient, leurs montagnes, leur mers… et enfin les missions des religieux et les divers evenements qui y arrivent", Lyon, 1669. Second edition of one of the RAREST travel accounts for the Levant. In 8vo 19x12cm, pp.[44],592. Contemporary full calf slightly rubbed at spine head and foot, spine richly gilt. Complete, title with engraved device. Ex Biblioteca of Anselmi van der Bogaerde, a very important early 19th century Belgian collection. Clean and fine inside, a very good copy. Pere Philippe, de la Saint Trinite (16031671), was a French missionary to the Levant and travelled extensively from 1623 to 1633, visiting Greek areas, Anatolia, Armenia, Syria, Arabia, even India. His base for many years was the Catholic missionary station at Ispahan, in Persia. He gives very detailed contemporary accounts for most of the countries of the Levant and the itineraries and notes of his several journeys. His main focus was the condition of the Christians of the Levant. The provided information, for the early 17th century, are precious. He published his account firstly in Latin in 1649. EXTREMELY RARE. Not in Atabey or Blackmer.
